When we found out we were being sent to Mississippi we were told that the cost of living was so low down here that it would be like Marty got a $15-20k raise. He got a raise for coming here, and that combined with the $15-20k in savings made for a pretty sweet deal. Except that it hasn't worked out that way.
I haven't even started my price book for here, but I can already tell that things are much more expensive here. Just an example: My laundry detergent (Tide with Febreeze) was 17.87 at WalMart in Michigan and is $20.87 at WalMart here. At Winn Dixie it was $23.99. I was able to buy laundry detergent (Tide with Bounce) at a salvage store for 70% off the marked price of $23.99, but that was a one time deal.
So my food related goals for the upcoming week are:
1) Start a Meridian price book
2) Check out the farmers market - This runs 6 days a week "seasonally". I have no idea what "seasonally" means in Mississippi, but I am going to call and find out.
3) Check out the Volume Meat & Vegetables store I found - I called and said something like "I am new to the area. Please tell me about your store." Her reply was "We are called Volume Meat & Vegetables. We sell meat & vegetables." You just can't argue with that. I did find out that they are open to the public, so I am going to check them out.
4) Check out Sam's club to see if it would be worth the membership cost
Soooo... While I think our grocery budget is going to have to be bumped up a bit, I am still going to do what I can to spend as little as possible while still serving good, nutritious food. Wish me luck!
